beach & coastal gardens
Along the coasts of England there is a growing awareness of the exciting possibilities posed by the unique climate afforded to those houses built close to the sea.
In the last six or seven years, I have been designing an ever increasing number of beach gardens. The absolute key to them is the use of appropriate materials and plants. Obvious, you might think, but the vast majority of such gardens try hard to ignore their location, yearning instead towards suburban mediocrity.
Yet beach gardens have something wild and exciting about them, which should be channeled and celebrated!
The British coast in winter is notoriously dull, with that dank, out of season feel. Yet I have stood, on a rainy January, in one of the gardens I designed and found it alive and vibrant with Mediterranean colour, shape and texture, contrasted all the more by the surrounding drear.
If you've got a beach garden, I want to design it!
