Planting to garden at Grand Designs Live 2006

Descriptions are given here of some of the planting used on the sustainable landscape I designed for Grand Designs Live 2006 at ExCel, Docklands, London. The planting was restricted by availability for the show, so I have also included here species I would have used if available (bulleted lists)! These lists are by no means exhaustive and many other plants would have been suitable.

Trees

  1. Black Walnut - walnuts
  2. Bird Cherry wild cherries
  3. Common Birch - sap (ferment for wine!)
  4. Hazel, common & purple
  5. Amelanchier - fruit
  6. Cornus Kousa - fruit
  7. Elder - berries

Shrubs

  1. Mahonia - most produce fruit
  2. Berberis asiatica, darwinii - fruit
  3. Vaccinium - most produce fruit
  4. Elaeagnus - most produce fruit
  5. Cotoneaster franchettii
  6. Cornus kousa - fruit
  7. Bamboo - young shoots

Herbs

  1. Fennel - leaves, seeds, teas
  2. Thymus - cooking

Herbaceous

  1. Hosta - Stems are edible (cooked)
  2. Hemerocallis - flowers
  3. Achillea - herbal teas
  4. Iris pallida - essential oils
  5. Catmint - leaves, teas
  6. Carex elata - roots, seeds
