schools and community design
School garden and outdoor classroom. BALI award winning design, 1999
Design for a self-build pond for a special needs school
Schools and community design are one of the most challenging - and rewarding - aspects of urban landscape design. I say urban, for that's where most projects are based, although this is by no means exclusive. My principle experience here is with primary schools, but there are several areas where I can be involved:
School Grounds.
I am a professional member of “Learning Through Landscapes” (see links page) and firmly believe that schools should provide the most special environments for children. I have designed several primary school playgrounds, one of which (right) won a BALI award in 1999 and a Sussex Heritage award in 2000. The scope is huge for the creation of exciting environments to stimulate play and learning, as well as quiet areas for relaxation. The therapeutic effects of being outdoors in such environments are well known.
Housing Associations
Creating communal gardens for housing associations or tenant/owners is something I would very much like to be involved in. In such a situation, I would see my role as being that of facilitator, allowing a collective design to emerge.
Charitable Projects
Again, creating gardens for those with physical or mental challenges, or other needs, is something I have had some limited experience with and would like to do much more of.
