This garden was commissioned by Grand Designs Live to demonstrate the principles of sustainability applied to an urban landscape. I chose materials for their environmental credentials: rammed earth walls avoid the use of cement, paved tops were low cement with fly-ash added, gravel was recycled stone and concrete through a recycled plastic geogrid. Water represented a greywater recycling system from the nearby Huf Haus and was to irrigate the planting.
Planting was to demonstrate an edible landscape, although there were constraints on availability of species. Edible flowers such as Hemerocallis, fruits and berries from Elder, Elaeagnus, Mahonia. Nuts were available from Hazel and Bamboo have edible shoots. Aquatics such as Saggitaria have edible bulbs.
